ATENCIÓN A LA DEPRESIÓN POSPARTO Y PREVENCIÓN DEL SUICIDIO MATERNO: RETOS, LIMITACIONES Y OPORTUNIDADES DESDE EL TRABAJO SOCIAL

Resumen
La depresión posparto constituye un problema de salud pública de gran magnitud y se reconoce como uno de los principales factores de riesgo de suicidio materno. A pesar de su elevada prevalencia, el fenómeno continúa invisibilizado y con limitaciones en su abordaje dentro del sistema sanitario español. La finalidad principal de esta investigación es analizar el rol del Trabajo Social en la prevención del suicidio en mujeres con depresión posparto, identificando riesgos, barreras y oportunidades de intervención. Para alcanzar este objetivo se adopta una metodología cualitativa basada en entrevistas semiestructuradas a cinco madres con diagnóstico de depresión posparto y cinco profesionales sanitarias. Los resultados evidencian la existencia de factores psicológicos, sociales y estructurales que incrementan la vulnerabilidad de las madres, así como carencias en recursos, programas y seguimiento posparto. Frente a estas limitaciones, se propone la consolidación de redes de apoyo, el fortalecimiento de estrategias interdisciplinares y la inclusión activa de trabajadores/as sociales en equipos de salud, desempeñando funciones de prevención, intervención y posvención. El Trabajo Social se configura así como un agente clave en la protección del bienestar emocional materno y en la reducción de conductas suicidas.

Abstract
Postpartum depression represents a major public health issue and is recognized as one of the main risk factors for maternal suicide. Despite its high prevalence, the phenomenon remains largely invisible and inadequately addressed within the Spanish healthcare system. The primary aim of this study is to analyze the role of Social Work in preventing suicide among women with postpartum depression, identifying risks, barriers, and opportunities for intervention. To achieve this objective, a qualitative methodology was adopted, based on semi-structured interviews with five mothers diagnosed with postpartum depression and five healthcare professionals. The findings reveal the presence of psychological, social, and structural factors that increase maternal vulnerability, as well as shortcomings in resources, programs, and postpartum follow-up. In light of these limitations, the study proposes the consolidation of support networks, the strengthening of interdisciplinary strategies, and the active inclusion of social workers in healthcare teams, performing prevention, intervention, and postvention functions. Social Work thus emerges as a key agent in protecting maternal emotional well-being and in reducing suicidal behaviors.
